Plot
After discovering the house is inhabited by ghosts, a single mother named Gabbie hires a tour guide, a psychic, a priest, and an historian to help exorcise it.
We already know that Gabbie will be played by Rosario Dawson (Ahsoka), Ben will be the tour guide, and Owen Wilson’s (Loki) Kent will be the priest. Tiffany Haddish’s (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent) Harriet is the psychic, while Danny DeVito’s (Dumbo) unnamed professor is the historian. The Hat Box Ghost, an prominent part of the attraction that has only recently returned to the ride and was heavily hinted at during the event to be performed by Jared Leto (Morbius), is one of the ghosts who will appear.

Production
The Haunted Mansion was being adapted for a reboot by Walt Disney Pictures in July 2010, with Guillermo del Toro as writer and producer. The project, according to Del Toro, will take place in a heightened reality rather than a real-world setting. He said the film would be “scary and enjoyable at the same time, but scary will be scary,” and stated that the Hatbox Ghost would be one of the main characters.
Walt Disney Imagineer Jason Surrell was appointed as a creative adviser to the project in June 2011. del Toro delivered the PG-13 final version of his script to Walt Disney Studios in August 2012. Del Toro announced in July 2013 that he would no longer direct the film, but would continue to co-write and executive produce it. Ryan Gosling was in early talks to appear in the film in April 2015. The screenplay was rewritten by DeVincentis. Brigham Taylor was appointed as producer in September 2016.
After it was decided that del Toro’s screenplay was too frightening for family viewers, Katie Dippold was hired to write a new script for the picture in August 2020. Producers were Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich. Walt Disney Pictures and Rideback will collaborate on the project as a joint-venture production. Justin Simien was officially named director in July 2021, after entering early negotiations to helm the picture in April 2021.
