About Jammu Kashmir Police

In 1873, a single police officer named Kotwal and 14 Thanadars for Srinagar City formed the first distinct Jammu & Kashmir police force. With the assistance of Chowkidars and Harkaras, who were required to be paid by the citizens of the Imperial Kashmir Union, this police force would manage crime and handle problems involving law and order.

The Imperial Police (IP) officer’s services were requisitioned by the state in 1913, and Mr. Broadway was appointed as the first Inspector General of Police in June of that same year. Other IP officers took over as police chief after him until 1917.

Since then, there have been numerous reorganizations of the J&K Police. The number of police officers employed in J&K was 1040 in the years 1889–1890, 1570 in 1903, and 3179 in 1943–1944, 40 years later. As of now, the number of police officers in J&K has surpassed the 83000 mark.

Medical Examination

General – Candidates should have excellent color vision and squint-free eyes. A temporary disqualification will be given for varicose veins. He or she must be in sound bodily and mental condition. He or she must be free of any physical flaws, illnesses including diabetes, hernias, piles, respiratory conditions, and any other condition that could hinder effective performance of duties.

Eye Sight – Without corrective lenses, the distance vision should be at least 6/6 in one eye and no worse than 6/9 in the other. Normal near vision is expected.
