करवा चौथ कथा
करवा चौथ व्रत कथा के अनुसार एक साहूकार के सात बेटे थे और करवा नाम की एक बेटी थी। एक बार करवा चौथ के दिन उनके घर में व्रत रखा गया। रात्रि को जब सब भोजन करने लगे तो करवा के भाइयों ने उससे भी भोजन करने का आग्रह किया। उसने यह कहकर मना कर दिया कि अभी चांद नहीं निकला है और वह चन्द्रमा को अर्घ्य देकर ही भोजन करेगी। अपनी सुबह से भूखी-प्यासी बहन की हालत भाइयों से नहीं देखी गयी। सबसे छोटा भाई एक दीपक दूर एक पीपल के पेड़ में प्रज्वलित कर आया और अपनी बहन से बोला – व्रत तोड़ लो; चांद निकल आया है। बहन को भाई की चतुराई समझ में नहीं आयी और उसने खाने का निवाला खा लिया। निवाला खाते ही उसे अपने पति की मृत्यु का समाचार मिला। शोकातुर होकर वह अपने पति के शव को लेकर एक वर्ष तक बैठी रही और उसके ऊपर उगने वाली घास को इकट्ठा करती रही। अगले साल कार्तिक कृष्ण चतुर्थी फिर से आने पर उसने पूरे विधि-विधान से करवा चौथ व्रत किया, जिसके फलस्वरूप उसका पति पुनः जीवित हो गया।
