Redmi Watch 3 Active Review: Light On The Wrist And Pocket, Heavy On Features, Pros & Cons

Redmi Watch 3 Active Review:- According to IDC, the smartwatch segment in India has seen a whopping 179% year-on-year growth and the hottest brands outside of Noise are Fire Boltt and Boat. Of course, there are quite a few other players in the field, and to say the least, the competition is fierce. Redmi’s latest salvo comes in the form of the Watch 3 Active, which tries to set itself apart in basic aspects like design and loaded feature set including Bluetooth calling. Let’s take a closer look. It is also quite responsive and produces vibrant colors. Sunlight readability is good, but note that brightness has to be adjusted manually and there’s also no Always On Display feature.

However, you can choose to keep the screen on for up to 20 minutes, at the expense of battery life. On the other hand, there’s Raise to Wake, which works fine as usual. The only downside here is that the bezels around the screen are quite noticeable, especially the chin.

What's In the Article

Xiaomi has returned to the smartwatch segment with its latest product, the Redmi Watch 3 Active. From an aesthetic point of view, the new Redmi smartwatch resembles the Redmi Watch 2 Lite, thus having similarities with the rectangular face of the Apple Watch. However, the Redmi Watch 3 Active has a larger 1.83-inch screen.

It also offers most of the standard features you’d expect from a modern smartwatch, including step counting, heart rate monitoring, Bluetooth calls, app alerts, water reminders, and more. However, some features are missing, such as the altimeter for the number of flights of stairs. Xiaomi also offers a green strap (sold separately). The strap does not have a traditional metal buckle. This gives the watch a sporty look. Unless you are allergic to silicone, the Redmi Watch 3 Active is very comfortable to wear, even during exercise or while sleeping.

About Redmi Watch 3 Active

The new Redmi Watch 3 Active has a slightly rectangular frame with rounded corners and I must mention that it looks a lot like the Apple Watch many people even confuse it with it. The smartwatch we received is silver in color and it comes with a coated resin metal dial that gives it a premium look. The watch comes with a large 1.83-inch display that is bright and vibrant enough to provide enough brightness for outdoor use. It comes with very smooth touch response and relatively thick bezels, but it still delivers a very immersive viewing experience. The smartwatch is 5 ATM water resistant, suitable for a variety of activities.

The Redmi Watch 3 Active offers various health features including heart rate monitoring, stress monitoring, SpO2 monitoring, and sleep monitoring. Users can sync messages and calendars to reduce phone usage time. The Mi Fitness app allows users to customize the widgets and have more control over the look and settings. However, some health metrics may not be completely accurate, such as step count and stress level. Also, to use it, I tried to use the smartwatch while swimming and unfortunately it doesn’t have the feature to show a swim option but the website suggests it does. I think I’ll have to double check with the brand.

Redmi Watch 3 Active Price in India 2023

Just looking at the price is enough to understand why this is an attractive purchase. Rs 2,999 for a fitness watch that looks good, is comfortable to wear, includes all the health facilities and fitness features, comes with a useful app, offers plenty of customization options.

Redmi Watch 3 Active Features

Redmi Watch 3 Active picks up the basics and delivers a satisfying experience. Its strengths lie in its large screen, impressive battery life, and intuitive app experience. However, it faces fierce competition from domestic players that offer similar features at lower prices. Xiaomi may need to revise the general design and improve the auto tracking features to stay on top of the market. Overall, the Redmi Watch 3 Active offers value for its price and can be a reliable extension to your smartphone. While smartwatches offer notifications, call logs, and calendar access, there’s no always-on mode. The screen has the functions of “rise to wake” and “cover screen to activate sleep mode”, which work smoothly.

Design and display

The Redmi Watch 3 Active has a regular rectangular dial, but still stands out thanks to its premium-looking metal finish. According to the brand, this finish is the result of a “non-conductive vacuum metallization” coating. The construction material is still plastic, and so the watch is quite light and weighs only 42 grams. Available color options include Platinum Gray and Charcoal Black. The right side of the device has a single button to open the application list as well as the microphone, while the left side has a speaker located at the bottom. The device is water resistant up to 5 ATM and you can take it to the pool or shower without worry.

The rubber band is matte, soft and supple so you can wear the watch for a long time without feeling uncomfortable. The strap uses a locking and latching mechanism and a quick release latch to lock onto the watch. However, the strap has a small protrusion at the end that fits into the notches on the sides of the device. The bands are interchangeable and you’ll have to buy a new strap from Redmi itself, at least until third-party compatibility options hit the market. I tried to install the standard 22mm straps on the watch, but the experience was not ideal and removing them was difficult.

Redmi Watch 3 Active comes with most of the smart and health-related features expected from an affordable smartwatch. Smart features include the usual features like app notifications, alarms, timer, music control, find phone, remote photography, and more. That said, the main function of the watch should be Bluetooth calling. The watch works via Bluetooth 5.3, and through the Mi Fitness app that the watch uses to pair and sync with your smartphone, you can set up 10 favorite contacts for speed dialing, see call history and even get a dialer.

Call quality is also quite good. While it works well in quiet environments, I had a chance to try it out outdoors in a somewhat noisy area and was able to hear and transmit a quick response without issue. This feature can be useful in situations where it is impractical to take your phone out of your pocket or bag. On the health and fitness front, you get features like a pedometer, continuous heart rate monitoring, SpO2, sleep tracking, women’s health features, stress monitoring, and more.

UI and app connectivity

Activity is controlled with a swipe, as is the case with most smartwatches. You can swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up the quick settings panel while swiping down to show notifications. Swiping to the side scrolls through the widgets, while pressing the side button brings up all the apps. Widgets that appear when swiping next to are quite interesting and work similar to Android widgets. Of course, you are limited by the screen size, but you can choose the layout and add/remove small information modules to your whims and preferences to display things like battery level, weather, heart rate, step count, music control, etc.

Redmi Watch 3 Active uses Mi Fitness as a companion app for pairing and syncing with smartphones, and the app is available on iOS and Android. It’s neatly categorized into tabs that show you health data, let you start workouts, control device settings, and more. The layout of the app is easy to understand and requires almost no learning. You can see health data trends, workout details, and more.

Usage, Performance And Battery

The touchscreen is responsive, and there’s no noticeable lag or stutter when navigating through the watch’s various menus and functions. As for the health stats, they seem fine for the most part, within an acceptable margin of error so no complaints there. The watch comes with a charging cable that magnetically attaches to the pogo pins on the back of the device. A full charge takes less than a few hours, and the brand promises up to 12 days of battery life. I got about 8 days of intermittent use on a single charge, which is pretty good in my books.
