About RIMC
The long-standing demand of Indian nationalists to Indianize the officer corps of the British Indian Army is the source of RIMC, originally known as the Prince of Wales Royal Indian Military College. Viceroy Lord Curzon’s “Memorandum on Commissions for Indians” from June 4, 1900, was the first significant step in the Indianisation of the officer corps. He had started the Imperial Cadet Corps in 1901, first in Meerut and then at Dehradun, over significant opposition. This Imperial Cadet Corps (ICC), often referred to as the Raj Wada Camp in the Deon Valley, served as the precursor to the current RIMC.
People were coerced and even threatened into joining the Army during recruiting campaigns, particularly in Punjab, which served as the primary recruiting region and supplied one-third of the Army’s personnel. During World War I, Sir Michael Odier, the Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, travelled from district to district urging the martial races to participate. The best strategy for encouraging more Indians to enlist in the Army was the assurance of a commission. “As regards the subsequent grant of King’s Commissions, the Government of India has already submitted their proposals before the Home Government and we may be sure they will receive early and sympathetic attention,” he reiterated on May 4th, 1918.
