Background Story
A national Non-cooperation movement was started by Mahatma Gandhi, also known as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. They got people from all over the country to join them, and the movement became one of the biggest protests against the British. A lot of people came together at Chauri Chaura on February 4, 1922, to support the non-violent Non-Cooperation movement. In order to achieve Swaraj, also known as home rule, they challenged oppressive government regulatory measures.
When the police arrived at Chauri Chaura, they opened fire on the protestors. The demonstrators attacked and set fire to the Chaur Chauri Police Station in retaliation. The episode prompted the demise of many police staff and regular citizens.
As a direct result of the incident, Mahatma Gandhi put an end to the Non-Cooperation Movement at the national level on February 12, 1922. In spite of Mahatma Gandhi’s decision to put an end to the Non-Cooperation movement, British colonial authorities detained a large number of demonstrators and announced the execution of nineteen (19) of them and the life sentence for fourteen (14) of them.

Movie Plot
The real-life incident that took place on February 4, 1922, at Chauri Chaura, in the Gorakhpur District of the United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh), serves as the basis for the movie.
Another Backstory
Ravi Kishan, who plays Bhagwan Ahir in the movie, quit his job as a soldier for the British government and joined the Non-Cooperation movement on his own initiative. While Bhagwan Ahir was protesting against high food prices and liquor sales at Gauri Bazaar on February 2, 1922, two days prior to the Chaura Chauri incident, some police officers beat the protesters, arrested many leaders, and sent them to Chaura Chauri Police Station.
Because of this, around 2,000 to 2,500 dissidents gathered and started walking towards the market path at Chauri Chaura on 4 February 1922. The situation spiraled out of control when police opened fire to disperse the crowd and frighten them. The demonstrators attacked and set fire to the Chaur Chauri Police Station in retaliation. Numerous civilians and members of the police force died as a result of the incident.
Numerous of the protesters who were detained were later sentenced to life in prison or the death penalty by the British government. Later on, Madan Mohan Malviya, played by Ravi Shankar Khare, and Baba Raghav Das, played by Aazad in the movie, challenged the verdict in the Allahabad High Court.
