Amavasya November 2024

The Sanskrit term amavasya describes the new moon’s lunar phase. Thirty lunar phases, known as tithi in India, are used in the Hindu lunar calendar. In Hindu culture and beliefs, Amavasya is seen as a period of immense power. With the exception of Kartika Amavasya, which is the Amavasya of the Hindu holiday Diwali, the majority of Amavasya days are regarded as unlucky.
Amavasya is a day on which people hold pitra pujas because it is believed to be favourable to worship forebears every month. Known as Ashwin Amavasya or Pitra Paksha (Mahalaya), the dark fortnight of Ashwin month (September-October) is particularly important for making offerings to dead ancestors. On the day of Amavasya, people also take a holy bath in the Ganga river. Monday-falling Amavasya, often referred to as Somvati Amavasya, has unique religious significance for Hindus. It is thought that keeping a fast on this Amavasya day would prevent widowhood in women and guarantee childbearing.

Amavasya Mythological Story

The Moon, also called Chandra Dev, was a young, fair, and handsome man holding a lotus and a club. King Daksha Prajapati’s 27 daughters were married to him. Rohini was his favourite wife out of all of them since she was the most beautiful. He used to prefer spending more time with her than paying attention to the other twenty-six wives. Daksha was furious with Moon for his bias and unfairness when the other wives complained to their father. He vowed that Chandra Dev would progressively lose her beauty and brilliance.

Still, the world became overly depressing when the Moon was gone. So the Moon adored Lord Shiva and pleaded for him to be freed from the curse. Moon’s penance was greatly appreciated by Lord Shiva, who partially freed him from the affliction of darkness. Consequently, this causes the Moon to maintain its regular waxing and waning. In addition, there is a single day known as Amavasya each month when the light goes completely out.
