Early life and Education
MK Stalin was born as Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin on 1 March 1953 in Chennai (then Madras), Tamil Nadu, India from the second wife Dayalu Ammal of M Karunanidhi. He got his name after a Soviet revolutionary and politician, Joseph Stalin, who died just four days later of his birth. MK has three brothers, MK Muthu, MK Alagiri and MK Tamilarasu, and two sisters, Selvi and Kanimozhi. He completed his schooling from Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School and graduated with a degree in history from Presidency College, Chennai.
Political Career
MK Stalin entered politics at an early age of 14, when he campaigned for DMK in the 1967 assembly elections. He was arrested under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the Emergency in 1976 and spent 13 months in prison. MK became the first directly elected Mayor of Chennai in 1996 and served till 2002. He was also elected as an MLA from Thousand Lights constituency in 1989, 1996, 2001 and 2006, and from Kolathur constituency since 2011.
He held various portfolios as a minister in the DMK governments headed by his father M Karunanidhi. MK was the Minister for Rural Development and Local Administration from 2006 to 2011, and the Deputy Chief Minister from 2009 to 2011. He became the Treasurer of DMK in 2008 and the Deputy General Secretary in 2003. MK was appoint as the Working President of DMK in 2017, after his father’s ill health, and became the President in 2018, following his father’s death.
He led the DMK to a decisive victory in the 2021 assembly elections, defeating the incumbent AIADMK-BJP alliance. MK took oath as the eighth Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 7 May 2021. He also holds additional portfolios such as Home, Public, Police, Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, Indian Forest Service, District Revenue Officers, General Administration, Special Initiatives, Special Programme Implementation, Welfare Of Differently-abled Persons and Other Departments not allocated to any Minister.

Family and Personal Life
MK Stalin married Durga (alias Shantha) on 20 October 1975 and has two children, Udhayanidhi Stalin and Senthamarai Stalin. Udhayanidhi is an actor, producer and politician who is currently an MLA from Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni constituency. Senthamarai is married to Sabareesan, who is an advisor to MK Stalin. MK Stalin follows Hinduism as his religion and is known to be an atheist like his father. He is also a fitness enthusiast who does yoga and walks regularly.

DMK espouses the principles of social justice, self-respect, rationalism, secularism and federalism. It advocates for the rights and interests of the Tamil people and opposes Hindi imposition and Brahmin domination. It is also part of a larger coalition of opposition parties called INDIA (Indian National Democratic Alliance). Which aims to provide an alternative to the BJP-led NDA at the national level. MK Stalin has expressed his optimism on the expansion of the INDIA alliance by including more political parties.
