Mehta was born on 6 September 1988 in Chandigarh, India, She has a younger brother. As a child, together with her brother, Mehta auditioned for the dance reality show Boogie Woogie; they were both declined. Mehta completed her schooling at the Sacred Heart Convent school and Carmel Convent School in Chandigarh.
She as well finished her graduation in Bachelor of commerce from the Kirori Mal College, Delhi University. Sargun then started studying for a Master’s degree in Business Management, however left to go after her acting career. Thereafter, she was cast in the tv programme 12/24 Karol Bagh. After the programme ended, she moved to Mumbai.

Mehta’s fame spread when she portrayed in the 2011 tv series Phulwa and the 2012 Kya Huaa Tera Vaada. She accepted herself as a major performer, when she emerged the Colors TV drama series Balika Vadhu in 2013.
Mehta started acting in cinema productions in her college, and later travelled into tv personality, having created her screen launch in 2009 with Zee TV’s 12/24 Karol Bagh. Colors TV’s drama series Phulwa spotted a significant changing point in her career, earning her critical praise. Mehta got acclaim for her assisting work in the 2009 series 12/24 Karol Bagh and in the 2013 series Balika Vadhu. She as well hosted the dance reality show Boogie Woogie Kids Championship.
Sargun created her feature movie launch with the 2015 Punjabi romantic comedy Angrej, the production, which appeared as the 2nd highest grossing Punjabi movie of the year had her describe the character of Dhann Kaur, a member of an aristocratic family in the pre-partitioned Punjab. She won the PTC Punjabi Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in the movie. Mehta has since emerged in other successful Punjabi movies involving the dramas Love Punjab (2016) and Lahoriye (2017). Her playing of a bothered housewife in the former earned her a Filmfare Award Punjabi for Best Actress. Mehta had won 7 Best Actress Awards in 4 years in many Award Ceremonies.

Career
Sargun did her graduation and gave an audition for 12/24 Karol Bagh, and therefore made her debut in tv industry by bagging a role in it. In addition she did not leave Delhi as the show was shot in Delhi. In 2015, she marked her debut in the punjabi film industry with the movie Angrej. As well in 2018 she made an appearance in the Punjabi film Qismat. Sargun has also co-starred with Binnu Dhillon in the punjabi film Kala Shah Kala in 2019.
