The current President of India, His Excellency Shri Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, laid the foundation stone for the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences on December 14, 1980, on the King Georges Medical University campus. With the motto Hospitals with a long oral history of excellence have demonstrated abundantly that investigation enhances the vitality of teaching, teaching lifts the standards of service and service opens new avenues of investigation, the State Government sought to establish a cutting-edge medical education, training, medical care & research institution.

The departments of Critical Care Medicine, Hematology, Pediatric Gastroenterology, and Pediatric Surgical subspecialty were establish over time in response to the requirements of patients. Plastic Surgery, Maternal & Reproductive Health, Pulmonary Medicine, Molecular Medicine & Biotechnology, Ophthalmology, and Neonatology were developed as part of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Sewa Yojna program. The Institute launched the Telemedicine program in 1999 to promote the idea of interactive video conferencing-based tele surgical education. The nation’s only center of its kind, the School of Telemedicine & Biomedical Informatics was established in 2006.
