June 30 was chosen as a public holiday to commemorate the day of the largest asteroid impact in Earth’s history, also known as the Siberian Tunguska event.

UN adoption of Asteroid Day

The Space Explorers Association and Romanian astronaut Dumitru Prunariu submitted a proposal to the United Nations in February 2016 for an Asteroid Day celebration. The proposal was accepted by the United Nations Subcommittee on Science and Technology. Furthermore, in June 2016, the United Nations Commission on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space included this recommendation in its report. On 6 December 2016, the report was submitted for endorsement and adopted by the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
