Tecno Camon 18 review: a mixed bag

Tecno Camon 18 review:  2021 has presented many hurdles for all smartphone makers, including Techno. With new devices coming out one after another, the company was expected to have something exciting.

As a result, in India in December he launched the Tecno Camon 18, which has a modern look without excessive design elements. Nevertheless, it’s stylish and suits your individual style.

Tecno Camon 18 Prices in India, Variants, Availability

Tecno Camon 18 starts at Rs. 14,999 in India. It can be purchased on major e-commerce platforms such as Amazon. The only variant of the Tecno Camon 18 comes with 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. There are two color variations. Dusk Gray and Iris Purple

Design

If you look at the front of your smartphone, you’ll see a terribly boring phone. Large screen, with a small hole in the middle for the camera and nothing else. There’s a camera flash hidden somewhere here. But it works. On the far right, you’ll find all the interesting stuff. Volume and power buttons fused with a fingerprint scanner. It’s very modest: So much so that you don’t even realize it’s there. On a very modern phone, having a dedicated fingerprint scanner that doesn’t actually appear on the screen is a very dated feature, but it’s hardly a deal breaker for anyone. I’m too used to scanners to go back. Fortunately, we have facial recognition that works very quickly.

The most interesting part is the back. It has a clean glass backplate. It has a cool texture and looks cool. Nothing spectacular, but still very nice. The camera block is also sleek, with three giant vertically-placed sensors, and the device wobbles on any flat surface, much like any modern phone. Overall, the design is modern, if a little uninspired. The thing I disliked the most was the rounded plastic edges, which were noticeable and felt very cheap. But this is subjective: I’m a fan of edgy and sharp designs, and prefer metal edges if possible. But it’s not a $500 phone. As far as sacrifice is concerned, this is fairly minor.

Display

The 6.8-inch display isn’t bad either. The device is equipped with an AMOLED FHD+ (1080×2400) panel with a refresh rate of 60 Hz. The pixel density is ~393 and the brightness is 550 nits. Nothing fancy, but given China’s most affordable flagship.

This display stands out for its refresh rate and bright AMOLED panel that performs brilliantly in the sun and offers more or less natural colors. By the way, you can force the phone to always use 60Hz mode, but it won’t work for games that only run at 60Hz. It’s a shame, but not surprising given that the processor is the device’s weakest link. But more on that later.

There are not many display modes. There are no “alive or “natural” switches, nothing fancy like that. Even if you set it to “always on”, the screen will go black if you don’t hold the device. a shame: I wish it had full AlwaysOn support like the Realme GT Neo 2.

Performance

This is the first MediaTek Helio G96 based smartphone that we have tested. This is a mid-level platform that falls short of the level of “real” flagships. Based on 12nm process technology, the Helio G96 features an 8-core processor with two Arm Cortex-A76 cores with a frequency of 2.05GHz. Graphics are handled by Arm Mali-G57. As I said, this is the main problem for many buyers:
It’s a solid processor, but it lacks the power to run heavier games on high settings or take advantage of a fast screen. This is not a gaming phone, but it’s okay. Not all mobile phones need to be like this.

Overall, it’s weaker than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G, but it’s good enough for a modern phone. But browsers, communications, social networks and his Co. processor and 8 GB (LPDDR4X) RAM are enough. Warming is not a problem. The phone works stably and does not freeze. Recall that this model only comes with 256 GB of memory. Add an SD card and you have a beast.

As for wireless communication, there is no support for 5G in the first place. This greatly reduces the future potential of the phone. Otherwise, WLAN (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac), NFC, Bluetooth 5.2, GLONASS, GPS with A-GPS, Beidou, Galileo.

Android 11 & HiOS 8

Android phones have a problem and that problem is the shell. Everyone knows what iOS looks and feels like, and probably many of us know what to expect from Samsung phones, but these Chinese brands are often more than happy with exciting hardware. While offering , it usually also has its own version of Android.

HiOS 8 is in many ways a standard shell. It borrows many ideas from more popular alternatives with varying degrees of success. It’s fast, smooth, and offers a lot of personalization. But there is also a lot of bloatware, ads can sneak into notifications, and the size of many of his UI elements seemed too large to me. It is really a pity. Apps we recommend not opening, I tried Vskit once and was inundated with TikTok-like videos. Most of them were from Nigeria, where Vskit is best known.

Cameras

As mentioned, this phone is made for taking pictures, not for gaming. In fact, it’s the company’s core business, and Tecno says something very impressive about his three sensors. But how good are they? Can I use it to make a “professional video”? So

The TECNO CAMON 18 Premier is pretty impressive on paper. The main camera uses Samsung S5KGW1 sensor (48 megapixels). Believe it or not, the optical stabilizer is not here. Reserved for the second module.
OmniVision OV12D2Q with a wide angle of 12 megapixels. The telephoto camera has an 2 megapixel sensor, OmniVision OV08A10. This gives him access to another flagship feature, his 5x zoom.

The front camera is no joke either: Samsung’s 48-megapixel ISOCELL S5KGD2 module (like the Galaxy A52s) with dual flash.

First, the app. that’s good. Just a normal Android camera app with some questionable features. First of all, color correction by AI. All the photos just turn yellow. nice. AI is ubiquitous here. No way to turn it off, at least I couldn’t find it. And if it’s not completely disgusting to do his job, I’d be fine with, The socalled AI CAM most of the time I don’t know what I’m referring to. When you look at the game box, you think it’s food. When I take pictures of the city at night, it’s still called food – I think I’m always hungry. Pity, but still. Oh, and the phone activates portrait mode when you take a picture of a plant. I understand.

It has some great modes for taking great zoomed-in photos of the moon, such as Supermoon mode. I couldn’t test it because it was the dead of winter and I hadn’t seen a clear sky in weeks. There is also a super night mode which we will discuss later.

What about photos? they’re okay Pretty good. The main camera has good contrast and low noise. It is a level that is not a problem for this segment. HDR is enabled by default and the dynamic range is wide enough. If you want to take better heavy pictures, you can choose 64Mp mode.

Sound

Tecno isn’t known for its bombastic sound, and the TECNO CAMON 18 Premier has just one multimedia speaker, so no stereo. It’s loud, that’s all. Not suitable for music. But it has Bluetooth 5.2 with support for SBC, AAC, LDAC and unfortunately no aptX. AAC is rarely the best when it comes to Android, but this time I had no complaints, With the Yamaha YH-E700A headphones, I was able to enjoy a smooth, spacious sound with plenty of volume, even in a noisy city. I used Apple Music on lossless settings. There’s also an audio jack connection here, so you can use wired headphones without an adapter. An unexpected but very welcome addition. Oh, and there’s also DTS sound to make things even better.

Battery life

The TECNO CAMON 18 Premier has a 5000 mAh battery, which is fine. It supports charging at 33 watts and the corresponding charger is already included in the scope of delivery. I can’t say anything bad about battery life. Even if you use it actively, you can use it for a day, and the charging itself is fast, about 1 hour. Unfortunately, there is no wireless charging.

Verdict

The TECNO CAMON 18 Premier is priced like a premium mid-ranger but actually has some flagship qualities. His camera first. Wish the periscope lens worked better but other than that it’s pretty impressive also the bright he has a 60Hz AMOLED display glass back wired headphone support and great selfies his camera also available increase. And the price isn’t bad either. Of course, not everything is great. The optical zoom doesn’t work well for me and the software looks inelegant. The lack of 4K recording is also a downside, but it’s still a decent phone from a brand that does what it does best — take a look if you’re into affordable camera phones.

Conclusion

The Tecno Camon 18 is a smartphone that has both strengths and weaknesses. While it boasts impressive camera capabilities and a sleek design, it falls short in other areas like battery life and processing power. Overall, it may be worth considering for those who prioritize camera quality above all else. However, if you’re looking for a more wellrounded smartphone experience, there may be better options available. Whether or not the Tecno Camon 18 is the right fit for you ultimately depends on your individual needs and preferences. Be sure to weigh the pros and cons carefully before making a decision to purchase this device.
