Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury:- Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is an Indian politician and the leader of the Indian National Congress (INC) in the 17th Lok Sabha. He is also the president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee and the chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee. He has been representing the Berhampore constituency of West Bengal in the Lok Sabha since 1999.

Education
Chowdhury was born on 2 April 1956 in Berhampore, Murshidabad district, West Bengal. His parents were Niranjan and Saroja Bala Chowdhury. He studied at I.C. Institute in Berhampore, but dropped out of school at the age of 15. He joined the Indian National Congress party during the premiership of Rajiv Gandhi.
Family
Chowdhury married Arpita Chowdhury on 15 September 1987. They had a daughter, Shreyashi Chowdhury, who died in October 2006. Arpita died on 9 January 2019. He later married Atashi C Chowdhury.
Adhir is also known for his social work and philanthropy in his constituency. He runs several schools, colleges, hospitals, and charitable trusts for the welfare of the people. Adhir is also an avid sports lover and supports various sports clubs and associations in his region.
Political Career
Chowdhury contested his first election in 1991 from Nabagram constituency in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, but lost by a narrow margin. He won from the same constituency in 1996 and became a member of the state assembly.
In 1999, he contested the Lok Sabha election from Berhampore constituency and defeated the sitting MP Pramothes Mukherjee of Revolutionary Socialist Party by a huge margin. He has been re-elect from the same constituency for six consecutive terms till date.
He served as the Minister of State for Railways from 2012 to 2014 in the UPA government led by Manmohan Singh. Adhir was also appoint as the president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee twice, in 2014 and 2020.
In 2019, he was elected as the leader of the Indian National Congress in the Lok Sabha, succeeding Mallikarjun Kharge. He also became the chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee, a key parliamentary panel that scrutinizes government expenditure.

As a leader of the opposition, he has been vocal against the BJP government on various issues such as farmers’ protests, Covid-19 management, economic slowdown, border disputes, and corruption allegations. He has also faced criticism for his controversial remarks and unruly conduct in the parliament. In 2023, he was suspended from the Lok Sabha for his ‘unruly behavior’ during the debate on the no-confidence motion moved by his party against the Modi government.
