Significance of United Nations Public Service Day
United Nations Civil Service Day focuses on the contribution of public services, recognizes the work of civil servants and celebrates the values of both public services and their employees. The day also aims to encourage young people to pursue careers in the public sector. To further strengthen the importance of this day, the United Nations also created his 2003 “UNPS Awards” (UNPSA) programmed. The purpose of the award is to promote good public service by identifying and rewarding the contributions and achievements of public institutions that lead to faster and more effective government administration in each country. In addition, the day will also provide a platform for discussing practices and policies, discussing emerging issues and trends, and exploring innovative approaches to delivering effective public services.
History of United Nations Public Service Day
United Nations Public Service Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in the 2003 United Nations Resolution A/RES/57/277. The resolution’s agenda is to “celebrate the values and virtues of public service to the community.” In addition, the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) created the United Nations Civil Service Awards, which are presented on the occasion of Public Service Day. In 2016, the program was further reviewed in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
June 23 was chosen as the day of celebration to commemorate the date of the 1978 adoption of the Industrial Relations (Public Officials) Convention of the International Labor Organization. The Convention serves as a model for defining working conditions for civil servants around the world.

Observation of United Nations Public Service Day
The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) annually organizes a forum with the host country and hosts an event to celebrate UN Civil Service Day. The event will also host a capacity building workshop, the award ceremony of the UN Public Service Award, and a ministerial roundtable meeting. Thousands of participants, including ministers, heads of state, heads of government and other high-level decision makers, gather to celebrate the day.
